It’s
Summer @ The Art House in Wyong again for 2026, and there are lots of supercool things for everyone to see and do for one creative month during January. One event coming up is
Spike the Echidna , presented by Little Wing Puppets.
One day, a greedy rat steals the echidna egg from its nest and hatches it, raising Spike far from home. Spike meets a little girl in the bush, playing alone and hiding from bullies. When she meets him, he has no spikes and she doesn’t know what he is. Join Spike and the little girl as she tries to work out what he is and where he comes from, accidentally putting him in danger and in the wrong nests. A crocodile. An emu. A turtle. Watch as the frightened echidna feels rejected and alone, but together, Spike and the little girl will find out where he belongs…and the little girl will learn to stand up for herself.
This will be told using shadow theatre, and is an interactive experience for the audience as well. Enjoy live, original music by Mal Webb, and be entertained whilst having fun. Plus, it will spark discussions about being different and belonging in the world. It will teach kids about the unique biology of Australian animals like the egg-laying echidna. Stay back after the performance to catch a demonstration of shadow puppetry techniques, so kids can learn about a hands-on storytelling medium that is very accessible to them.
