In 1957, Australia's rock scene was nearly nonexistent until the Dee Jays, featuring vocalist Johnny O'Keefe, supported Bill Haley during his tour. This exposure led to a contract with Festival Records, catapulting O'Keefe into a pivotal role in popularizing rock and roll in Australia. His dynamic performances alongside legends like Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry earned him the title "The Wild One." O'Keefe's career saw him hosting the national radio show "Six O'Clock Rock" from 1959 to 1962, touring America, and later hosting "Sing! Sing! Sing!" Despite his success, the pressures of his career led to overwork, depression, and a near-fatal car crash in 1960, culminating in publicized nervous breakdowns. Struggling with family life and health issues, O'Keefe continued to make significant contributions to music until his untimely death in 1978 at age 43, leaving a lasting legacy in the Australian music industry.
